The Message of Christ in the Bible.
The Beginning of all Physical Things. ?>(According
to one
ancient Jewish
belief,
God’s time is
different
from human time.
Therefore ‘days’ really
means
‘stages’) The Beginning of
the
Universe. 1:1 In the beginning, God created
the
heavens and
the
earth. 2
The
earth
was
without
form and void, (the earth
was empty of
life),
and darkness was
over
the
face of
the
deep
(sea). And the
Spirit of
God was hovering
over the face
of the
waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be
light,” and there was light. And there was evening
and there was morning,
the
first
day. The beginning of
clouds in the sky. 6 And God said, “Let there be
clouds and let them separate the waters from the
waters.” And there was
evening
and there was
morning,
the
second
day. And God saw that it was
good. The Beginning of
Vegetable Life. 11 And God said, “Let the earth
sprout vegetation, plants [5] yielding seed, and
fruit trees bearing fruit
in
which is their seed,
each
according to its kind, on
the
earth.” And it
was so.
12
The earth
brought forth
vegetation,
plants yielding
seed
according to their own
kinds,
and trees bearing fruit
in
which is their
seed, each
according to
its
kind. And God
saw that it
was
good. 13 And
there was
evening
and there
was morning,
the
third
day. God reveals the night sky. 19 And God made the sun, moon and
stars
appear
there was
evening
and
there
was
morning, the fourth
day. The beginning of sea creatures and
birds. 20 And God said, “Let the waters
swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds
[7] fly
above
the
earth
across
the expanse
of the
heavens.” 21 So God
created
the
great sea
creatures
(dinosaurs?) and
every
living
creature that
moves,
with which the
waters swarm,
according
to their
kinds, and
every
winged bird
according to
its kind.
And God saw
that it
was
good.
22 And God
blessed them,
saying,
“Be
fruitful and
multiply and
fill the
waters in
the seas,
and let
birds
multiply
on the earth.”
23 And
there
was evening and
there
was
morning, the fifth
day. The Beginning of
Animals who live on
earth. 24 And God said, “Let the earth
bring forth living creatures according to their
kinds—livestock and
creeping
things and beasts of
the earth
according to their
kinds.” And
it
was so.
25 And
God made the beasts of
the
earth according to their
kinds
and the livestock
according to
their
kinds,
and
everything that creeps
on
the
ground
according to
its kind.
And God
saw that it
was
good. The Beginning of
Human
Life. 26 Then God said, “Let us make
man in our image, after our likeness. And let them
have dominion over the
fish of
the sea and over
the
birds of
the heavens
and
over
the
livestock
and over
all the
earth and over every
creeping
thing that creeps on
the
earth.” 27 So God created man in his own
image, in the image of God he created
him; male and female he created
them. 28 And God blessed them. And God
said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the
earth and
subdue
(control
its wild
character) it
and have
dominion
(authority) over the
fish
of the
sea and over the birds
of the heavens
and over every
living thing
that
moves on the earth.” And
God
saw
everything that he had
made, and behold,
it was
very
good. And there
was
evening
and there was
morning,
the sixth
day. God enjoys His
good
creation. Thus the heavens and the earth
were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on
the seventh day God
finished
his work that he had
done, and
he rested on the
seventh
day
from
all his
work
that he had done. 3 So
God
blessed the seventh day
and
made
it holy, because on
it
God
rested from all
his work
that
he had done in
creation. The beginning of all
things
was
information
or
word. 1:1 In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. 2 He was in the
beginning
with God. 3 All
things
were
made through him, and
without him
was
not any thing
made that was
made. 4 In him
was life, [1]
and the
life
was
the light of
men. The End of this old
world and its new beginning.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new
earth,
for
the
first
heaven
and
the
first
earth had
passed away,
and the
sea was no more. 3 And
I
heard
a loud voice
from
the throne saying,
“Behold,
the
dwelling place
[1] of God
is
with man. He will dwell with
them, and
they will be his
people, [2]
and God
himself
will be
with them
as their
God. [3] 4
He
will wipe away
every tear from
their
eyes, and
death
shall be
no more,
neither
shall there
be
mourning, nor crying, nor
pain
anymore, for the
former
things
have passed
away.” 5 And he who was seated on the
throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”
Also he said, “Write
this
down, for these words are
trustworthy and true.” 6
And
he said to me,
“It is
done! I am the
Alpha and the
Omega, the
beginning
and the end. To
the
thirsty I
will give from the
spring of the water
of
life
without
payment. The Life of
Jesus. 5 the blind receive their sight
and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf
hear, and the dead are
raised
up, and the poor have
good
news preached to
them The Teaching of
Jesus. The
Beatitudes. 2 And Jesus opened his mouth and
taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in
spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn,
for they shall be
comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they
shall
inherit
the
earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be
satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for
they shall receive
mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart,
for
they
shall
see
God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called sons [1] of
God. 10 “Blessed are those who are
persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is
the kingdom of
heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others
revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of
evil against you
falsely on my
account.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your
reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted
the prophets who were
before
you. Salt and
Light 13 “You are the salt of the
earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its
saltiness
be
restored?
It is
no longer good for
anything except to be
thrown
out
and
trampled under
people's
feet. 14 “You are the light of the
world. 16 Let your light shine before others, so
that they may see your
good
works and give glory to
your
Father who is in
heaven. Christ Came to
fulfil the Old
Testament. 17 “Do not think that I have come
to
abolish
the
Law or
the
Prophets; I
have not
come
to abolish them
but to
fulfill them.
Oaths 33 “Again you have heard that it
was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear
falsely, but shall perform
to
the Lord what you have
sworn.’
34 But I say to you,
Do
not
take an oath
at
all,
either by heaven,
for it
is
the throne of God,
35 or
by the earth,
for it is
his
footstool, or by
Jerusalem, for it is
the
city
of the great
King.
37 Let what you say be simply
‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from
evil.
[6] Retaliation 38 “You have heard that it was
said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’
39 But I say to you, Do
not
resist the one who is
evil.
But if anyone slaps you
on the
right
cheek,
turn to
him the other also. 40
And if anyone would sue you
and take
your tunic, [7]
let
him have
your cloak as
well. 41
And if
anyone forces
you to go
one
mile, go with
him
two miles.
42 Give to the
one
who
begs
from you,
and
do not
refuse the one who
would
borrow from
you. Love Your
Enemies 43 “You have heard that it was
said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your
enemy.’ 44 But I say to
you,
Love your enemies and
pray for
those who persecute
you,
45 so
that
you may
be
sons of your Father who is
in heaven. For he makes
his
sun rise
on the evil and
on
the good,
and sends
rain on
the
just and
on the unjust.
48 You
therefore must be
perfect, as
your
heavenly
Father
is
perfect. Do not show off your
religion. 6:1 “Beware of practicing your
righteousness before other people in order to be
seen by them, for then
you
will have no reward from
your
Father who is in
heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the
needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the
hypocrites do in the synagogues
and in the streets,
that they
may be praised by others. Truly, I say to
you, they have received their
reward. And your
Father who
sees in secret
will reward
you. The Lord's
Prayer 5 “And when you pray, you must
not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand
and pray in the
synagogues and
at the street
corners,
that
they may be seen by
others.
Truly, I
say
to
you,
they have received
their reward. 6 But when
you
pray,
go
into your room and
shut the
door and pray
to your
Father who
is in
secret. And
your Father
who
sees in
secret will reward
you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap
up
empty
phrases
as
the
Gentiles
do, for
they
think
that they will be
heard
for their many words. 8
Do
not be like them, for
your
Father knows
what you
need before you
ask him.
9
Pray then like
this: “Our Father in
heaven, hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom
come, your will be done, on earth as it
is
in
heaven.
Give us
this
day our
daily
bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as
we also have forgiven our
debtors. 13 And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from
evil. 14 For if you forgive others
their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also
forgive you, 15 but if
you do
not forgive others
their
trespasses, neither will
your
Father
forgive
your
trespasses. Lay Up Treasures in
Heaven 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves
treasures on earth, where moth and rust [5] destroy
and where thieves
break in and
steal, 20 but
lay up
for
yourselves
treasures
in
heaven,
where neither
moth nor
rust destroys and
where
thieves do not break in
and
steal. 21
For where
your
treasure is,
there
your
heart will be
also. Do Not Be
Anxious 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not
be anxious about your life, what you will eat or
what you will drink, nor
about
your body, what
you
will
put
on. Is not life more
than
food, and the
body more
than clothing?
26 Look
at the
birds of the
air: they
neither
sow
nor reap nor
gather into
barns, and yet
your heavenly
Father
feeds them.
Are
you not of
more value than
they? 27 And
which of you by
being
anxious
can add a
single hour
to his span of
life? [7]
Consider the
lilies
of the
field, how they
grow:
they neither toil nor
spin, 29
yet I tell you,
even
Solomon in
all his
glory
was
not arrayed like one
of
these.
30
But if God
so clothes
the
grass of the
field,
which today is alive
and
tomorrow is
thrown
into
the oven, will he
not much
more clothe you, O you of
little
faith? 31
Therefore do
not be anxious,
saying, ‘What
shall we
eat?’
or
‘What shall we
drink?’ or
‘What
shall we wear?’ 32 For
the
Gentiles
seek
after all
these things,
and
your heavenly Father knows
that you need them
all.
33 But
seek first the
kingdom of God and his
righteousness, and all
these
things will be added to
you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious
about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for
itself. Sufficient for
the day
is its own
trouble. Do not judge other
people. 7:1 “Judge not, that you be not
judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you
will be judged, and with
the
measure you use it will
be
measured to you. 3 Why do
you
see the speck
that
is in
your brother's eye, but
do not notice the log that
is
in your
own eye? 4 Or how
can
you say
to your
brother, ‘Let
me take
the speck out
of your
eye,’
when there is
the log in
your
own eye? 5 You
hypocrite,
first take
the log
out of your own eye,
and then
you will see clearly
to
take
the speck out
of your
brother's
eye. Ask, and It Will Be
Given 7 “Ask, and it will be given to
you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be
opened to you. 8 For
everyone
who asks receives, and
the one
who seeks finds, and
to
the
one
who
knocks
it will
be opened. 9 Or
which
one of you, if his son asks
him
for
bread, will give him a
stone? 10 Or if
he
asks
for a
fish, will give
him
a
serpent?
11 If you
then,
who
are evil, know
how to
give
good gifts
to your
children,
how much more
will
your Father
who is in
heaven give
good
things to
those who ask
him! The Golden
Rule 12 “So whatever you wish that
others would do to you, do also to them, for this is
the Law
and the
Prophets. Just some people will be saved – not
all. 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For
the
gate
is wide
and
the way
is
easy [1]
that
leads
to destruction, and
those who enter by it are
many.
14 For the gate is
narrow and the way is
hard
that
leads to life, and
those
who
find it are
few. Tree and Its
Fruit 15 “Beware of false prophets, who
come
to
you in
sheep's
clothing
but
inwardly
are
ravenous wolves.
16 You
will recognize
them by
their
fruits. Are
grapes
gathered from
thornbushes,
or
figs
from thistles?
17 So,
every healthy
tree
bears
good
fruit, but the
diseased
tree
bears bad
fruit.
18 A healthy
tree
cannot
bear
bad fruit,
nor can
a diseased
tree bear
good fruit. 19 Every
tree that
does not
bear
good
fruit is
cut down and thrown
into the
fire. 20 Thus you
will
recognize them by
their
fruits. I Never Knew
You The Day of
Judgement. 21 “Not everyone who says to me,
‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but
the one who does the
will of
my Father who is in
heaven. 22
On that day many will
say to
me,
‘Lord,
Lord, did we
not prophesy in
your name, and
cast out demons
in
your
name,
and do many mighty
works
in
your name?’
23 And
then will I
declare
to
them,
‘I never knew you;
depart from me, you
workers of
lawlessness.’ Build Your House on
the
Rock 24 “Everyone then who hears these
words
of
mine
and does
them
will
be like
a
wise man
who built his house
on
the rock. 25 And the rain
fell, and the floods came, and
the winds blew
and
beat on
that house, but it
did not fall, because it had been
founded
on the
rock. 26 And
everyone who
hears these words
of mine
and
does not do
them will be
like
a foolish
man who built his
house on the sand.
27 And
the
rain
fell, and the
floods
came, and the winds blew and beat against
that
house, and it fell, and
great was the fall of
it.” The Authority of
Jesus 28 And when Jesus finished these
sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching,
29 for he
was
teaching
them as
one who had
authority,
and not as their
scribes. The suffering of the Messiah (Jesus), prophesied 700 years
before by Isaiah 2 For he grew up before him like
a young plant, and like a root out of dry
ground; he had no form or majesty that we
should
look at
him, and no beauty that we should
desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected
[2] by men; a man of sorrows, [3] and
acquainted with [4] grief; [5] and as one from whom
men hide their faces
[6] he was despised, and we esteemed
him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him
stricken, smitten by God, and
afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our
transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities.
Upon him was the
chastisement
that brought us
peace, and with his stripes we are
healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone
astray; we have turned—every one—to his
own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the
iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was
afflicted, yet he opened not his
mouth; like a lamb that is led to the
slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers
is
silent, so he opened not his
mouth. He was cut off out of the land of
the
living,
stricken
for the
transgression of
my
people? 9 And they made his grave with
the wicked and with a rich man in his
death, although he had done no violence,
and
there
was no
deceit in
his
mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the
Lord to crush him; He has put him to grief;
[7] when his soul makes [8] an
offering for guilt, He shall see his offspring; he
shall prolong his
days; the will of the Lord shall
prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul
he
shall
see [9]
and
be
satisfied; by his knowledge shall the
righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted
righteous,
and
he
shall
bear
their
iniquities. He makes intercession for the
transgressors. The Sufferings of the Messiah. The Plot to Kill
Jesus 2 And the chief priests and the
scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for
they feared the
people. Judas to Betray
Jesus 3 Then Satan entered into Judas
called Iscariot, who was of the number of the
twelve. 4 He went away and
conferred with the chief
priests and officers how he
might betray him to
them. 5 And they were
glad,
and agreed
to give him
money.
6 So he
consented
and
sought an
opportunity
to betray him to
them in the
absence
of a
crowd. The Passover with
the
Disciples 7 Then came the day of Unleavened
Bread,
on
which
the
Passover
lamb
had to
be
sacrificed. 8 So
Jesus [1]
sent Peter and
John,
saying,
“Go and prepare
the
Passover
for us, that we
may
eat
it.”
14 And when the hour came, he
reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And
he said to
them,
“I
have
earnestly
desired
to eat
this
Passover with you
before I
suffer. 16
For I
tell
you I will not eat it [2]
until it is fulfilled in
the
kingdom
of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and when
he had given
thanks he
said, “Take
this,
and divide
it among
yourselves. 18 For I tell you
that from now on I
will
not
drink of the fruit of the vine until the
kingdom of
God comes.”
19 And he took bread, and
when
he had given thanks,
he
broke it
and
gave
it to
them, saying, “This
is
my
body,
which is given for
you. Do this in
remembrance of me.” 20
And
likewise the cup after
they
had
eaten, saying,
“This
cup
that is poured out
for you is
the new covenant
in
my
blood.
[3 Who Is the
Greatest? 24 A dispute also arose among
them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the
greatest. 25 And he
said to
them, “The kings of the
Gentiles exercise
lordship
over
them, 26
But
not so
with
you. Rather,
let
the
greatest
among you become
as
the
youngest, and the
leader
as one who serves. 27
For
who
is
the greater,
one
who
reclines at table or
one
who serves? Is
it
not the
one who
reclines at
table?
But
I am
among you as the one
who
serves. Jesus
Prays on the Mount of
Olives 39 And he came out and went, as
was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the
disciples followed him. 40
And
when he came to
the
place, he
said to
them,
“Pray
that you
may not
enter
into
temptation.” 41 And he
withdrew from them about a
stone's
throw, and
knelt down
and
prayed, 42
saying,
“Father, if you are
willing,
remove
this cup
from
me.
Nevertheless,
not my
will,
but
yours, be done.”
43 And
there appeared to
him
an angel
from heaven,
strengthening him. 44
And
being in an
agony he
prayed
more earnestly;
and his sweat
became like
great
drops of
blood
falling
down to
the ground.
[7]
45 And
when he rose
from prayer, he
came to the
disciples
and found them
sleeping for
sorrow,
46 and
he
said to them, “Why
are you
sleeping? Rise and pray
that
you may
not
enter into
temptation.” Betrayal and Arrest
of
Jesus 47 While he was still speaking,
there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of
the
twelve, was
leading
them.
He
drew near to Jesus
to
kiss
him, 48 but Jesus
said
to
him,
“Judas, would
you
betray the Son of
Man with
a kiss?” 49 And when
those
who
were around him saw
what would
follow,
they
said,
“Lord, shall we
strike
with the sword?”
50 And
one of them
struck
the
servant
[8] of the
high
priest
and cut off his right
ear. 51
But Jesus said, “No
more of
this!” And he
touched
his ear
and healed
him. 52
Then Jesus said
to the
chief
priests and
officers of
the
temple and
elders, who
had
come
out
against him,
“Have
you come out as
against
a robber, with swords
and
clubs? 53 When
I was
with you
day after
day
in
the
temple,
you did not lay
hands on
me. But
this is
your
hour, and
the power of
darkness.” Jesus Is
Mocked 63 Now the men who were holding
Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him.
64 They also
blindfolded him
and kept asking him,
“Prophesy! Who is it
that
struck
you?”
65 And they
said
many other
things against
him,
blaspheming
him. Jesus Before the
Council 66 When day came, the assembly of
the
elders
of
the
people
gathered
together,
both
chief priests
and
scribes. And they
led
him
away
to
their council,
and
they said, 67 “If you
are
the
Christ, tell us.”
But
he
said
to them, “If I tell
you,
you will
not
believe, 68
and if I ask
you,
you will not
answer.
69
But from now on
the Son of Man
shall be
seated at
the
right
hand of the power of
God.” 70
So
they
all said,
“Are you the
Son
of God,
then?” And
he said to
them,
“You say
that I am.” 71
Then
they said, “What
further
testimony do we
need? We
have
heard it
ourselves from
his own
lips.” Jesus Before
Pilate 23:1 Then the whole company of
them arose and brought him before Pilate. 2 And they
began to
accuse
him,
saying,
“We
found
this man
misleading
our nation
and
forbidding us
to
give
tribute
to
Caesar,
and
saying that he
himself is
Christ, a
king.” 3
And
Pilate asked him,
“Are you
the King of the
Jews?”
And he answered him,
“You
have said
so.” 4
Then
Pilate said to the
chief
priests and the
crowds, “I
find no guilt
in
this man.” 5
But they
were
urgent,
saying, “He
stirs up
the
people,
teaching
throughout all Judea,
from Galilee
even to
this
place.” 13 Pilate then called together
the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14
and said to them, “You
brought
me this man as
one
who
was
misleading the people.
And
after
examining
him before
you, behold, I did
not find
this man guilty of
any
of
your
charges against him.
him.”
[1] Pilate Delivers
Jesus to Be
Crucified But they all cried out together,
“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19
a man who
had
been
thrown into
prison
for
an
insurrection
started in the
city and
for murder.
20
Pilate
addressed them once
more,
desiring to release
Jesus, 21 but they
kept
shouting, “Crucify, crucify
him!” 22 A third
time he
said
to them,
“Why,
what evil
has he done? I
have found in
him no guilt
deserving death.
I will
therefore
punish
and
release
him.” 23 But they were
urgent,
demanding
with
loud
cries that
he should be
crucified.
And
their
voices
prevailed. 24 So
Pilate
decided that their demand
should be granted. 25 He
released the man who
had
been
thrown
into
prison
for
insurrection
and
murder, for
whom they
asked,
but he
delivered
Jesus
over to
their
will. The
Crucifixion 32 Two others, who were
criminals, were led away to be put to death with
him. 33 And when they
came to
the place that is
called The
Skull, there they
crucified
him, and
the
criminals, one on his
right
and one on his left. 34
And Jesus said,
“Father,
forgive them, for
they
know
not what they
do.”
[2] And
they cast
lots to
divide his garments.
35
And the people stood
by,
watching, but the
rulers
scoffed at him,
saying,
“He
saved others; let
him save
himself, if
he
is the
Christ
of God, his
Chosen
One!” 36 The
soldiers
also
mocked him,
coming
up and
offering him
sour
wine
37 and
saying, “If you
are the King
of the
Jews, save
yourself!”
38 There
was
also an
inscription over
him,
[3]
“This
is the King of the
Jews.” And one of the thieves who was
crucified with Him said we are being crucified
justly, for we are
receiving
the due reward of our
deeds;
but this man has done
nothing
wrong.” 42 And
he
said, “Jesus, remember me
when
you come into your
kingdom.” 43 And he
said
to
him, “Truly, I say to
you, today you will be
with me
in
Paradise.” The Death of
Jesus 44 It was now about the sixth
hour, [5] and there was darkness over the whole land
until the
ninth
hour,
[6] 45
while
the
sun's light
failed.
And the
curtain of the
temple was
torn in
two. 46
Then Jesus, calling
out with a
loud voice,
said,
“Father,
into your
hands I
commit my spirit!” And
having
said
this
he breathed
his
last. 47
Now when
the
centurion
saw what had
taken place, he
praised
God,
saying,
“Certainly
this
man was
innocent!”
48
And all
the
crowds that
had
assembled for
this
spectacle,
when
they saw what
had
taken
place,
returned
home beating
their breasts. 49
And
all his
acquaintances and
the
women who
had
followed him
from Galilee
stood at a
distance watching
these
things. Jesus Is
Buried 50 Now there was a man named
Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a
member of the council,
a good
and righteous man, 51
who had
not consented to their
decision and
action;
and he
was looking for the
kingdom of
God. 52
This man
went
to
Pilate and
asked
for the
body
of Jesus.
53 Then
he
took it
down and
wrapped it
in
a linen shroud and
laid him
in a tomb cut in
stone,
where
no
one had
ever yet been
laid The
Resurrection 24:1 But on the first day of the
week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking
the spices they had
prepared.
2 And they found the
stone
rolled away from the
tomb, 3
but when
they
went in
they did not find the
body of the Lord Jesus. 4
While they
were
perplexed
about this,
behold,
two
men stood by
them
in dazzling
apparel. 5
And as
they were
frightened
and bowed
their
faces to
the
ground, the
men
said to
them, “Why do you
seek
the
living among the
dead?
6
He is
not here, but has
risen.
Remember how he
told
you,
while he was
still in
Galilee,
7 that the
Son of Man
must be
delivered into the
hands
of
sinful men and be
crucified
and on the
third day
rise.” 8 And
they
remembered
his words, 9
and
returning from the tomb
they
told
all
these
things to the
eleven
and to all
the rest. 10
Now it was Mary
Magdalene
and
Joanna
and Mary the mother
of
James and the other women
with
them who told
these
things to the
apostles,
11 but
these words
seemed to
them an idle
tale, and
they
did not
believe them. 12
But Peter rose and ran to
the
tomb;
stooping and looking
in,
he saw the linen cloths by
themselves; and
he went
home
marveling at what
had
happened. On the Road to
Emmaus 13 That very day two of them were
going
to a
village
named
Emmaus,
about
seven
miles
[1] from
Jerusalem, 14
and they
were
talking
with
each other about
all these things that
had
happened.
15 While
they
were
talking and
discussing
together,
Jesus
himself drew
near
and went with them.
16
But
their
eyes were kept
from
recognizing him. 17 And
he
said
to them, “What is this conversation that
you are
holding with each
other as you walk?” And they stood still,
looking
sad. 18 Then one of
them, named Cleopas,
answered
him, “Are you
the only
visitor
to Jerusalem
who does
not know the things
that have
happened
there in
these days?”
19 And he said to them,
“What things?”
And
they said
to him,
“Concerning
Jesus of Nazareth,
a
man who
was
a prophet
mighty in deed
and
word before
God and all
the people, 20 and
how
our
chief priests
and
rulers
delivered him up to
be
condemned to death, and
crucified him. 21
But we
had
hoped that he was
the
one to redeem Israel.
Yes,
and
besides all this, it
is now
the third
day
since
these
things
happened. 22
Moreover, some
women of
our
company amazed
us. They
were
at
the tomb early in the morning,
23 and when
they did
not find
his body,
they came back saying that
they
had even seen a vision of
angels, who said
that he
was
alive. 24 Some of
those who
were with us went to
the
tomb and
found it
just as the
women had
said, but him they
did
not
see.” 25 And
he
said to them,
“O foolish
ones, and slow of
heart to believe all
that the
prophets have
spoken! 26
Was
it not
necessary that
the
Christ
should
suffer these things and
enter
into
his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses
and all the
Prophets, he
interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the
things
concerning
himself. 28 So they drew near to the
village to which they were going. He acted as if he
were going farther, 29
but
they urged him strongly,
saying, “Stay with us, for
it
is toward
evening and
the
day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with
them. 30
When he was at table
with them, he took the
bread
and blessed and broke it
and
gave it to them. 31 And
their
eyes were opened, and
they
recognized
him. And
he
vanished from their sight.
32
They said to each other, “Did
not our hearts burn
within us
while he
talked to
us
on the road,
while
he
opened
to us the
Scriptures?”
33 And they rose
that same
hour and returned
to
Jerusalem. And
they found the
eleven
and
those who
were with
them
gathered
together, 34
saying,
“The
Lord has risen
indeed,
and has
appeared
to
Simon!” 35 Then
they
told
what had happened on
the
road, and how he was
known to them in the
breaking
of the
bread. Jesus Appears to His
Disciples 36 As they were talking about
these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and
said to them, “Peace to
you!”
37 But they were
startled and
frightened and thought
they
saw a
spirit. 38 And he
said
to
them, “Why are you
troubled,
and why do
doubts
arise in
your hearts?
39
See my hands
and my feet,
that it is I
myself.
Touch
me,
and see. For a
spirit does not
have
flesh and bones
as you
see
that
I have.” 40
And when he
had said this, he
showed
them
his
hands and
his feet. 41 And
while
they
still disbelieved
for joy and
were marvelling,
he said
to them,
“Have
you
anything here to eat?” 42
They
gave him a
piece
of
broiled
fish, [2] 43 and he
took it and ate before
them. 44 Then he said to them, “These
are my words that I spoke to you while I was still
with you, that
everything
written about me in the
Law of
Moses and the
Prophets
and the
Psalms must be
fulfilled.” 45
Then he
opened
their minds to
understand the
Scriptures, 46
and said
to
them,
“Thus it is
written,
that the
Christ
should
suffer and on
the
third
day rise from
the dead,
47 and
that
repentance
and
forgiveness of sins should
be
proclaimed in his
name
to
all
nations, beginning from
Jerusalem. 48
You are
witnesses of these
things.
49 And behold, I am
sending
the
promise of my
Father upon
you.
But stay in
the
city
until you are clothed
with
power from on
high.” The
Ascension 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God. ================================================ 'Faithand the Modern World' Home Page. |
