Economic Downturn

So the world is in financial meltdown. People are criticising the big bonuses and indeed the bonuses were wrong but it is not those bonuses that have caused the problem. The fact is that the world has been living for many years on artificial prosperity. That is debt. Money is supposed to be a measure of useful work and useful possessions that we do/have. But governments and private people have been living on debt. All of us have gained from the artificial prosperity even if we are not in debt. Now the economic system is taking us into very painful payback time. Many innocent people will lose their jobs and homes. Governments will try their best but won't be able to do much.

The desire for self-improvement is okay, especially if it is accompanied with the ability to help the needy. But this desire for self-improvement has degenerated into greed. That is what happens when Christianity is marginalised - many of our God-given instincts degenerate.

One good thing to come of all this is that people, in bad economic times, start wondering what human life is for and turn back to God. So be ready!
