Below is a brief description of Howard Taylor's course:

Aims

To give students the opportunity to develop further their critical thinking in relation to various ideologies, competing worldviews and alternative spiritual 'solutions' to humanity's problems in contemporary thought, and to enable them to formulate an appropriate and well-reasoned Christian response to them.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

1    critically assess various ideologies and understandings of the world represented in contemporary thought, and formulate a considered Christian response to them;
2    analyse proposed solutions to the human condition which are represented in contemporary thought, and critically evaluate them from a Christian perspective.

Content

The module includes:

1    an examination of the background to Christian thinking as it has developed in the West, including analysis of some Biblical passages;

2    a study of ideologies and other competing worldviews which are represented in contemporary thought, such as: Humanism, Scientism, Genetic Determinism, and Human Rights;

3    a critical assessment of proposed political solutions to the human condition, and a consideration of various views of the relationship between Religion and Politics;

4    an analysis and evaluation of proposed alternative spiritual solutions to humanity’s problems, such as offered in eastern religions, green spirituality and especially New Age thought;

5    a study of the collapse of 'ideology', including study of Existentialism, Post Modernism and Nihilism and exploration of appropriate Christian responses to them.

6. An introduction to Human Bioethics.
